What is Private Label Clothing

What is Private Label Clothing?

Private label clothing is when a manufacturer produces garments that carry your brand name instead of theirs. You own the brand. They handle production.

The manufacturer does not sell directly to consumers. They make products to your specifications, attach your labels, and ship to you. You sell to your customers as if you made it yourself.

How Private Label Works

You provide the design or select from existing styles. The manufacturer handles fabric sourcing, cutting, sewing, finishing, and packaging. The finished product arrives with your brand name on the label, hang tags, and packaging.

Some private label manufacturers offer full design support. Others require you to bring completed tech packs. The level of service varies.

Private Label vs White Label

Private Label

Made to your specifications. You control design, materials, construction. Unique to your brand.

White Label

Generic pre-made product. You add your label. No customization. Multiple brands sell the same item.

Private label offers differentiation. White label offers speed and simplicity.

Why Brands Use Private Label

Control without infrastructure. You get a product made to your standards without owning factories, hiring production staff, or managing equipment.

Brands use private label to launch new product lines, test markets, scale production, or focus resources on marketing and sales instead of manufacturing.

What to Look For

1 Minimum order quantities that match your volume
2 Quality standards that match your brand positioning
3 Communication that keeps you informed
4 Timelines that fit your launch schedule

Ask about their process. Understand who handles what. Know where production happens and who is accountable when problems arise.
